To our Elders

Alexandra Cacavas

I would like to take a moment on this day, the Day of the Dead, to remember not only those who have passed, but those who were born long before we came along. On this day, let us connect with our elders. For they have experienced life and learned its lessons, and therefore can offer guidance to those who are getting started. They have been through highs and lows, and come out the other side. They are full of wisdom and knowledge gathered from at least three generations past, for they have shared moments with our ancestors.

In today’s society, we have a tendency to lock away our elders, as if to shield ourselves from the fact that death is a part of life. We are raised without acknowledging or understanding the concept of death, and it comes as a shock when one of our relatives passes away. However, what would Life be without Death? One thing is certain: one cannot exist without the other, so why not learn to coexist?

We live in a society where, if someone is not part of the labour force or directly contributing to the economic system, they are discarded from view, forgotten in thought and made invisible. How did we come to this? Elders used to be held in such high esteem that communities would turn to them for guidance and advice.

Our elders have a voice and would love to be heard. They still walk among us, breathing, living, being… and they have a thing or two to teach us, a few stories to tell. On this sacred day of Samhain, let us honour our elders and ancestors, past and present.
