On 9 September, Mars will station retrograde at 28°09’ Aries and will station direct again on 13 November at 15°14’ Aries. Mars has been in Aries since 27 June and will not be leaving his home sign until 6 January 2021.
We are in for a bumpy ride, as the charging Warrior rides with the breaks on and is forced to slow down. On the physical plane, the frustration of a slowed-down Mars could manifest as erupting volcanoes and forest fires. On a health level, we could experience inflammation, irritation (especially on the face), migraines and accidents that leave open wounds.
Mars will be squaring Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn in Capricorn more than once during his transit, which will make us revalue our stance and relationship with the established order. Three squares to Saturn (between September and December) in particular make this retrograde a difficult time. Our individuality and freedom will be challenged as we face restrictions, delays and are looked down on by authority figures. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) will feel this transit most intensely.
This is not a good time to start new projects or pursue new interests, as we are likely to find roadblocks. It is rather an opportunity to revisit our plans and goals to improve them. This is also a good time to reassess the way we assert ourselves in the world and the way we come across to other people. Have we been too forceful or too direct? Have we been projecting our frustrations and anger onto other people, especially loved ones? Mars retrograde will likely bring these issues to the surface and, once they are in the open, it will be easier to make amends.
As Mars is his home sign, the effects of the retrograde are powerful. In the sign of Aries, it is the perfect opportunity to develop our leadership skills, to tap into our pioneer spirit and to find the courage, motivation and determination to accomplish our goals. This retrograde will teach us to think before acting and to choose our battles carefully.
Mars retrograde shines a light on the concept of Ego. Mars and Aries symbolise individuality and personality – what makes us stand out. Is the relationship with our ego a healthy or selfish one? Do we act solely to satisfy our desires or do we also take the needs of others into consideration? Where do we draw the line between imposing ourselves onto others and let other people walk over us? How do we find balance between Self and Others? We have two months to ponder and debate on this fundamental subject, especially when the Sun is in Libra (22 September – 22 October), opposite Mars.
Mars also symbolises sexual energy, especially masculine. Mars retrograde turns sexual energy, also known as life force, inwards. When sexual energy is not wasted or diffused outwardly, it can be transmuted into creative energy. Therefore, this retrograde is the perfect opportunity to tap into our creative expression and artistic talents, especially around 28 September, when Mars forms a trine to Venus in Leo, the sign of Love and Art, birthing creations from the heart with true passion. The act of transmuting life force into Creation restores the balance between masculine (yang) and feminine (yin) energy, a balance much needed at this time.
May your inner Warrior reconnect with the heart, its centre and true north, and evolve into a Spiritual Warrior.
